Letter from THCA President

Greetings,

I'm Gabriel Sanchez, and I’m proud to be Tobin Hill Community Association’s new president.   Tobin Hill continues to improve as a place to live, work, play, learn, shop, raise kids and more.

Our Tobin Hill Art Alliance friends are selling more contemporary art each month and have just partnered with San Antonio College’s art, music and theater departments to roll out an expanded Second Friday event starting in September.  Friends Randy Cunniff and Peter Becker of Texas Heat Investments are redeveloping the  block across from Luther’s on N. Main Ave. between Laurel and E. Evergreen, and new sidewalks are coming to E. Dewey in September.

The generous folks at Pearl  have opened the new Culinary Institute of America adjacent to the Riverwalk, and are about to break ground on Broadway and Avenue A for new living spaces.

Alamo Architects will be master planning Crockett Park thanks to its generous bid and to funding found by District 1 Councilwoman Mary Alice Cisneros.

2011 McCullough Ave., a vacant and blighted historic building in Tobin Hill’s  Neighborhood Commercial Revitalization (NCR) District will be moved to Five Points  shortly, where it will be restored and begin its new life as a headquarters for a nonprofit organization.

While many of you may not know me, I intend to change that.   I am currently working with THCA members  to understand their concerns for the neighborhood and how they think we might remedy those concerns. I will work with each of you to help make Tobin Hill the Community you envision it to be.

We can only accomplish this by working together.  This is why THCA has been so successful.

One of the priorities that has surfaced in Tobin Hill is safety issues.  I am already working with THCA volunteers, the SAPD and the Council Woman's office to ensure our safety and well being.   Recently, the Alamo Lodge on Elmira St. was sued by the city and will be closed due to numerous violations involving drugs, violence, weapons, and gang activity.  On E. Evergreen, a crack den was recently shut down.  Happily, the landlord is now restoring the house and moving into the neighborhood!  This was accomplished by concerned (and yes, angry), neighbors working together.

THCA will be addressing as many "Front Porch Issues" as we have  volunteers for.  These include: crime, vagrancy, noise pollution, community services, graffiti and litter, code compliance, stray animals, and historic preservation.  I encourage you email me at This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it with your thoughts and concerns.

Won’t you kindly attend  as many public meetings as possible? They are a wonderful way to meet your neighbors and become involved in your community I want to meet all of you and build lasting friendships as we continue to make Tobin Hill the safest,  most vibrant and interesting place to live in San Antonio.

I look forward to seeing you in the neighborhood,

Gabriel Sanchez
